MEDICAL SERVICES

Medical Services delivers quality, cost-effective health care services to adult offenders in our correctional facilities. The program works to meet the basic health care needs of offenders by providing general primary care, acute inpatient hospital care, dental services and optometric care. The aim is to continually explore new ways of providing basic health care services more efficiently.

Medical Services provides acute care, including IV therapy and wound care, skilled/long term care, emergency care including trauma, and end-of-life care. Many of our patients have chronic medical conditions and/or behavioral health conditions. 

SIOUX FALLS
The Jameson Annex is a maximum-security prison facility that includes the intake unit for all male inmates. It includes a behavioral health unit and a 20-bed infirmary with two comfort care rooms. Health Services is staffed 24/7. Onsite services include dental staff, an optometrist, lab and x-ray, ultrasound/MRI. We also partner with the Avera health system for eCare and eConsult capabilities.

The South Dakota State Penitentiary is a high medium-security prison facility that houses male inmates. Health Services is staffed 24/7 and onsite services include behavioral health staff, dental staff, an optometrist, lab and x-ray, ultrasound/MRI. We also partner with the Avera health system for eCare and eConsult capabilities.

Sioux Falls Community Work Center is a minimum-security prison facility that houses male inmates. Medical is staffed 7 days a week. Onsite services include behavioral health staff, dental staff, an optometrist, lab and x-ray and we partner with Avera for eConsult capabilities.

SPRINGFIELD 
Mike Durfee State Prison is a medium-security prison facility for male inmates. It has a 5-bed infirmary with a comfort care area. Health Services is staffed 24/7. Onsite services include behavioral health staff, dental staff, an optometrist, lab and x-ray, ultrasound/MRI. We also partner with the Avera health system for eCare and eConsult capabilities

PIERRE
The South Dakota Women's Prison is a maximum-security prison facility that includes the intake unit for all female inmates. Health Services is staffed 7 days a week. Onsite services include behavioral health staff, dental staff, an optometrist, lab and x-ray, ultrasound/MRI. We also partner with the Avera health system for eCare and eConsult capabilities Inmates who are pregnant when incarcerated receive care from an OB/GYN specialist. 

RAPID CITY 
The Rapid City Community Work Center is a minimum-security facility that houses male inmates.. Medical is staffed 7 days a week. Onsite services include behavioral health staff, dental staff, an optometrist, lab and x-ray. We partner with Avera for eConsult capabilities.

YANKTON
The Yankton Community Work Center is a minimum-security facility that houses male inmates. Medical is staffed 5 days a week. Onsite services include behavioral health staff, dental staff, lab and x-ray. We partner with Avera for eConsult capabilities.

Most of our facilities have a clinic-type environment. The Mike Durfee State Prison and the Jameson Annex have infirmaries as well as Comfort Care rooms available.
